In short: Beyond the waves of the DC Extended Universe lies a different tale of royalty. In this animated miniseries, King Aquaman must defend his crown against ancient evils and a sibling's betrayal, all while proving his legitimacy to the people of Atlantis.

Produced by James Wan, the animated miniseries 'Aquaman: King of Atlantis' explores a period of instability for the Atlantean throne. While the series follows the timeline of the 2018 live-action film, it exists outside the official DCEU canon. The narrative centers on Aquaman's attempt to prove he is the rightful ruler while facing threats from unscrupulous surface dwellers and ancient, timeless evils. The project was brought to life through the executive production of James Wan. This creative endeavor was initially revealed to the public in January 2020.

The conflict is deeply personal, as the King must contend with his half-brother's efforts to overthrow him. Alongside trusted allies such as Mera and Nuidens Vulko, Aquaman navigates these political and supernatural dangers. The production involved a collaboration between Atomic Monster, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Animation. The cast features various voices, including Kevin Michael Richardson as the Royal Announcer. Other notable characters such as Ocean Master also make appearances throughout the story.

The series had a complex release history. Originally announced in January 2020, the three-part miniseries premiered on HBO Max on October 14, 2021. A broader viewership reached the production when its feature-length cinematic version broadcast on Cartoon Network on 14 May 2022. However, the series' tenure on its original streaming platform was short-lived, as it was removed from HBO Max in August 2022. Following its television run, a DVD release arrived on June 21. The show was initially intended to be a part of the ACME Night programming block.
