In short: Between 1942 and 1944, the St. Lawrence River became a theater of war. German submarines penetrated deep into Canadian inland waters, sinking merchant ships and warships, and even attempting to extract escaped prisoners of war. It was a period of intense maritime combat that struck at the very heart of Canadian home waters.

The Battle of the St. Lawrence was characterized by opportunistic German attacks rather than a formal invasion plan. Starting in May 1942 with the sinking of the British freighter Nicoya, U-boats targeted the vital shipping lanes used to resupply the United Kingdom and the Allied forces on the Western Front. The scale of the threat was significant: German submarines sank over 20 merchant ships and four Canadian warships, including the destroyer HMCS Ottawa and the corvette HMCS Shawinigan.

The environment of the St. Lawrence—the world's largest estuary—presented unique tactical challenges. The mixing of fresh and salt water, combined with temperature variations, sea ice, and fog, severely hampered the effectiveness of shipboard sonar and RCAF aerial patrols. This made detecting submerged targets exceptionally difficult for the Royal Canadian Navy, which initially struggled with an inadequate force of only four warships, including a minesweeper and an armed yacht.

The conflict also involved unconventional warfare. In 1943, Canadian intelligence intercepted mail from German officers in a New Brunswick prisoner of war camp, revealing a plan for escaped prisoners to be retrieved by a U-boat at Pointe de Maisonnette. While the RCN launched 'Operation Pointe Maisonnette' to intercept the submarine, the U-536 managed to evade the task force. Despite the heavy losses and the psychological impact on coastal communities, the Canadian forces eventually achieved a strategic victory by disrupting U-boat activity and protecting essential convoys.
