In short: The French Surcouf was a maritime anomaly: a submarine designed to fight like a cruiser. Carrying massive 203 mm guns and even a floatplane, this 4,304-tonne behemoth was the largest of its kind until 1944. Yet, despite its immense firepower, its final fate remains a mystery of the night.

Built to bypass the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, the Surcouf was a specialized "submarine cruiser." While the treaty limited the caliber of guns on most vessels, France's Navy Minister, Georges Leygues, secured an exemption for this class. This allowed the Surcouf to carry a unique twin turret of 203 mm guns—the largest caliber permitted for a non-capital ship, exceeded only by the HMS M1's 305 mm guns.

The vessel was a complex engineering feat, designed for long-range oceanic patrols with a 10,000 nautical mile range. It featured a watertight hangar for a Besson MB.411 floatplane, used for reconnaissance and gunfire spotting. However, the submarine faced significant operational hurdles. Its massive size required a crew of 110 to 130 men—equivalent to three conventional submarines—and its guns could only be fired while surfaced, with a response time of roughly three and a half minutes from the moment of surfacing.

The Surcouf's career was marked by intense geopolitical tension. During the British Operation Catapult in July 1940, the submarine was involved in a violent incident at Plymouth, resulting in several fatalities. Later, serving with the Free French Naval Forces, it played a role in the liberation of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in December 1941. Its story ended abruptly in February 1942. While en route to Tahiti, the submarine vanished near Panama. While some suspect a mistake by a patrolling PBY aircraft, an American report suggests it may have collided with the freighter Thompson Lykes on a dark night, though this was not confirmed until 1945.
