In short: Bertrand of Orléans-Braganza is one of the primary heirs to the defunct Brazilian monarchy. Yet, despite his noble lineage and high-profile activism, he leads a deliberately modest life in São Paulo, living in a small rental while advocating for a return to imperial rule.

Following the passing of his sibling Luiz, Bertrand became the leader of the House of Orléans-Braganza's Vassouras line on 15 July 2022. He is one of two principal claimants to the Brazilian throne; the other is Pedro Carlos of the rival Petrópolis branch. This dynastic split stems from a 1908 dispute over whether Pedro de Alcântara renounced his succession rights, a move that fundamentally divided the family's legitimacy.

Born in France during World War II and raised on a farm in Paraná, Bertrand was shaped by a rigorous traditional Catholic formation. He became a prominent student leader in anticommunist circles at the University of São Paulo, graduating in 1964. Guided by 'Tradition, Family and Property' (TFP), he promotes a constitutional monarchy to solve the persistent corruption and instability inherent in the 1889 republican framework.

While Bertrand is a frequent public figure—appearing on late-night talk shows and speaking in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies—his personal lifestyle remains understated. For numerous years, his residence in a leased two-bedroom São Paulo flat highlights the imperial house's scarce funds since the republic began over 100 years ago. Furthermore, his choice to remain unmarried and childless out of religious devotion means that the succession within his branch currently rests solely on his leadership.

His activism extends beyond monarchism into sharp critiques of modern secularism. He opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, and radical environmentalism—which he labels as a 'psychological disorder' in some contexts—while championing private property rights and free enterprise. He remains a vocal proponent of restoring Christendom, where the state would recognize the primacy of the Church in moral matters.
