The borderland territory that changed hands across five centuries of empire
In short: Between the Prut and Dniester rivers, a single region has been claimed by the Ottomans, Russians, Romanians, and Soviets. From ancient Scythian lands to a contested modern frontier, the history of Bessarabia is a masterclass in the volatile nature of imperial expansion and shifting national identities.
The history of Bessaries is defined by its role as a vital land route into Europe. Following the Mongol invasions of the 13th century, the region saw waves of Slavic settlement, though these were frequently disrupted. By the 15th century, the area was incorporated into the principality of Moldavia. However, the Ottoman Empire soon moved to annex the southern portions, specifically capturing Akkerman and Chilia in 1484 and dividing the territory into Ottoman districts known as sancaks.
A pivotal shift occurred in 1812. Following the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–1812, the Treaty of Bucharest saw the Ottoman Empire acknowledge Russian annexation of the territory. While the local boyars—the landed nobility—protested the legality of the transfer, arguing the Sultan could not cede land that was merely a vassal state, the annexation proceeded. Russia initially granted the region autonomy between 1818 and 1828, allowing for a Moldavian governor and the use of both Romanian and Russian in administration. However, following the death of the influential Metropolitan Gavril Bănulescu-Bodori in 1821, Russia began a policy of Russification to suppress rising nationalist sentiments.
The 20th century brought even more rapid fragmentation. After the 1905 Russian Revolution, a nationalist movement emerged, leading the council Sfatul Țării to declare independence on January 24, 1918, and subsequently unite with Romania. This union was confirmed by the Treaty of Paris in 1920, though the Soviet Union refused to recognize it. In 1940, under the pressure of the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, Romania was forced to cede the region to the Soviet Union. Today, the historical territory of Bessarabia is divided between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
