In short: Developed from lessons learned in the Soviet-Afghan and Chechen wars, the BMPT Terminator is an armored fighting vehicle built to protect main battle tanks in dense urban environments. By handling anti-personnel threats with heavy firepower, it allows tanks to focus on their primary objective of engaging hardened enemy targets.

The BMPT, officially named Spiridon in June 2026, was created by Uralvagonzavod to solve a persistent tactical problem: main battle tanks struggle in mountainous and urban terrain due to limited gun elevation and vulnerability to close-range infantry. Combat experience in Grozny during the First Chechen War highlighted that conventional armor was insufficient against infantry-heavy ambushes, leading to the development of a dedicated support vehicle. The design concept traces back to the 1980s, with various prototypes like the Object 199 Ramka eventually evolving into the production model introduced in 2002.

The vehicle is heavily armed to engage multiple targets simultaneously across different height levels. Its arsenal includes four 9M120 Ataka anti-tank guided missiles, twin 30 mm 2A42 autocannons, two 30 mm grenade launchers, and a 7.62 mm machine gun. This configuration allows the BMPT to fire at different targets at once, with the commander and gunner utilizing independent stabilized sights to maintain hunter-killer capabilities. The armor is equivalent to that of a main battle tank, featuring 3rd generation Relikt explosive reactive armor and slat armor to defend against rocket-propelled grenades.

Deployment of the BMPT has been limited, with Russia first observing the vehicle in combat during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While intended to support tank units, the small number of vehicles in service has resulted in a limited impact on the conflict, with several units reported as damaged or destroyed by artillery and drones. Beyond Russia, the vehicle has seen export interest, including a 2016 agreement with Algeria and earlier acquisitions by Kazakhstan. Future iterations, such as the Terminator-3, aim to integrate the Armata platform, potentially moving toward fully unmanned operation and advanced 57 mm weaponry.
