In short: After fifteen appearances and a string of non-qualifications, Bulgaria has finally reached the top. Following a historic win in 2026, the nation has broken records for victory margins, transforming from a frequent non-qualifier into a dominant force in the contest.

Bulgaria's journey in the Eurovision Song Contest has been defined by both struggle and sudden brilliance. Since making its debut in 2005 with the band Kaffe, the nation has faced significant hurdles, failing to qualify for the final in nine of its 15 appearances. These setbacks were often narrow; in 2012, Sofi Marinova's 'Love Unlimited' lost a tie-break against Norway for the final 10th qualifying spot. Since 1993, the European Broadcasting Union has included Bulgarian National Television as a complete member. However, the broadcaster's debut was delayed until 2005 due to relegation rules.

Despite these early difficulties, Bulgaria has achieved remarkable high points. In 2017, Kristian Kostov became the first singer born in the 2000s to compete, securing a second-place finish with 615 points—the highest score the country had achieved prior to its ultimate triumph. This momentum continued through the early 2020s, with Victoria Georgieva reaching the final in 2021. The country's first successful qualification occurred in 2007 with the song 'Water'. This entry was notable for being the first Bulgarian-language song to compete.

The breakthrough arrived in 2026. Represented by Dara with the song 'Bangaranga', Bulgaria secured its first-ever contest win in Vienna. This victory was historic not just for the win itself, but for the scale of the triumph. Bulgaria achieved a winning margin of 173 points, surpassing the previous record of 169 points set by Norway in 2009. Furthermore, Dara's win marked the first time since Portugal's 2017 victory that a winning song topped both the jury and televoting counts. Following this success, Bulgaria is set to host the 2027 contest in Burgas. The 2026 victory was achieved after Dara won the second semi-final. This win marks the sixth time the nation has reached the grand final.
