The desert oasis that fueled the Inca Empire's logistics
In short: In the heart of one of the world's driest deserts, a hidden oasis served as a vital supply hub for the Inca. This strategic location provided the food and resources necessary to sustain imperial troops and trade routes, leaving behind mysterious artifacts that still baffle modern scientists.
Located in the Atacama Desert, Calama is defined by its extreme environment, receiving an average of just 5 mm of annual precipitation. Despite this aridity, the city sits within an oasis fed by the River Loa, Chile's longest river. Historically, this geography created a unique sanctuary. One hypothesis suggests the name Calama comes from the Kunza word 'Ckara-ama,' meaning 'town in the middle of the water,' describing a site that appeared as an island surrounded by swamps and fertile plains.
The region served as a critical logistical node for the Inca Empire. Situated at the intersection of the Camino del Inca and coastal Altiplano routes, Calama became a primary shelter for the Despoblado de Atacama. The local inhabitants cultivated corn and alfalfa, providing the high-capacity food supply required to support the troops of the Chasquis (imperial messengers) and to pay tribute to the Inca state. This strategic importance is evidenced by the presence of copper horseshoes found in the area, which were produced using a 'mysterious' Incan technique that remains unexplained by modern science.
Following Spanish colonization, the hostile climate hindered total control, but Calama remained a vital provision point for commercial routes connecting the silver deposits of Potosí to the coast. While the late 19th-century border conflicts between Chile and Bolivia were concentrated in the central prairie and coast, Calama maintained its role as a hub for communication and trade. Its modern growth was further accelerated in 1886 with the establishment of a railway station, and again in the 21st century as residents moved from nearby mining towns to the city for housing.
