In short: Long before the first hikers reached its summits, a violent cosmic dance shaped the Cairngorms. Massive continents collided, volcanic arcs crashed into landmasses, and immense granite plutons rose from deep underground to create the spectacular, high-altitude plateau we see today.

The foundation of the Cairngorms lies in the Dalradian Supergroup, a massive sequence of muds, sands, and limestones deposited between 800 and 600 million years ago on the edges of the ancient continent, Laurentia. This landscape was not formed by quiet accumulation, but by the intense tectonic forces of the Caledonian Orogeny, which occurred between approximately 490 and 430 million years ago.

Two distinct geological events defined this era. First, the 'Grampian event,' centered around 470 million years ago, saw a volcanic island arc collide with Laurentia over a 20-million-year period, causing the initial deformation of the Dalradian rocks. This was followed by the 'Scandian event,' a second collision involving the continent of Baltica, which further folded and faulted the rock sequences.

During these upheavels, active strike-slip faults—including the Great Glen, Ericht-Laidon, and Glen Tilt faults—may have facilitated the ascent of large granite plutons. The largest of these, which forms the core of the Cairngorms, was emplaced roughly 427 million years ago. Scientists believe this granite was originally buried at depths of 4 to 7 km. Over time, the landscape was unroofed, and by 390 million years ago, the early stages of the modern Cairngorm landscape had begun to emerge.

While the mountains themselves are ancient, the surface has been continuously reshaped. Over the past 2.5 million years, glacial cycles have shaped the landscape through various erosional and depositional processes, creating the park's distinct arctic-alpine character via elements like landslips and peat.
