The ambitious attempt to create a new gaming mascot through dream worlds
In short: In 1997, Namco sought to challenge the industry's giants with a new hero. The result was Klonoa, a character designed to bridge the gap between 2D platforming and 3D visuals, navigating surreal landscapes as a "Dream Traveler" to save worlds from peril.
The Klonoa series, primarily developed by Namco, centers on an anthropomorphic character who possesses features of both a cat and a rabbit, though his exact species remains undefined. Designed by Yoshihiko Arai, the character's aesthetic was a deliberate evolution from an earlier, colorless concept named "Shady." Arai focused on the silhouette and eyes to ensure immediate recognition, adding a large hat featuring a Pac-Man emblem to evoke a sense of youthful energy. The character's design includes a collar to enhance his childlike quality. He is often depicted as a kind-hearted individual who is willing to face any odds to ensure justice is served.
Gameplay-wise, the series is noted for its unique blend of 2D mechanics within 3D environments. A signature feature involves using a ring and "Wind Bullets" to inflate enemies, which can then be thrown to create platforms or provide upward boosts for double jumps. Despite garnering critical praise—notably earning GameSpy's 2001 PlayStation 2 "Platform Game of the Year" award for Lunatea's Veil—the franchise has faced financial difficulties. The series' handheld titles, released for the WonderSwan and Game Boy Advance, helped establish the franchise's design standards. Additionally, the character has made various cameo appearances in other Namco titles, such as the Tekken and Soulcalibur series.
The franchise's history is marked by significant shifts in platform and reception. After the initial success of 1997's Door to Phantomile, subsequent entries like Lunatea's Veil saw critical praise but weak sales, selling only 133,401 copies in Japan during 2001. Even a 2008 Wii remake failed commercially, leading to a long hiatus until the 2022 Phantasy Reverie Series remasters brought the franchise back to modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. The 2022 Phantasy Reverie Series remasters achieved significant success in the United Kingdom, reaching number five on the sales charts during their debut week. This resurgence follows a period where the series saw limited releases, including an exclusive Japanese launch for Moonlight Museum.
