In short: From 1,000-ton corvettes to 3,100-ton frigates, the Gowind family offers a versatile blueprint for modern maritime security. Developed by France's Naval Group, these vessels are engineered for the complexities of the littoral zone, utilizing stealth and unmanned technology to master shallow waters and high-stakes combat.

The Gowind design, developed by France's Naval Group since 2006, is a highly adaptable family of steel monohull vessels. Originally encompassing offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), the line was restructured to allow Naval Group to focus on heavily armed warships while a joint venture, Kership, handles civilian-standard OPVs. The resulting family includes the Gowind 1000, a 1,000-ton corvette for escort and policing, and the Gowind 2500, a multi-mission corvette designed for surface and subsurface combat. A larger 3,100-ton variant, the Gowind 3100, serves as a frigate, utilized by Malaysia and Egypt.

Technological sophistication defines the platform. The ships utilize a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion system and water-jets to enhance maneuverability in shallow waters. To maintain a low observable profile, the ships feature an integrated mast that houses sensors in a single central structure, providing a 360-degree view without a traditional funnel. This design also supports modern unmanned warfare, with facilities for unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles (UAVs, USVs, and UUVs), alongside a 10-ton class helicopter deck.

The design has seen significant international adoption through complex procurement deals. Egypt's selection of the Gowind over German or Dutch alternatives led to the construction of vessels like the El Fateh, which completed sea trials in early 2017. Other nations have engaged with the platform, including the United Arab Emirates, which signed a €750 million contract in 2019 for 2,500-class frigates, and Malaysia, which is locally building five stealth frigates based on the Gowind 2500 design. However, the design's journey is not without friction; for instance, Romania cancelled a €1.2 billion contract in 2023 due to pricing disagreements.
