The general who mastered the art of landing on land
In short: Before World War II, the United States lacked a cohesive doctrine for large-scale amphibious assaults. Holland Smith, nicknamed "Howlin' Mad," transformed naval and marine strategy from disorganized landings into a precise science, fundamentally shaping how modern superpowers project power across oceans.
Holland McTyeire Smith was instrumental in creating the blueprint for modern U.S. amphibious warfare. On the eve of World War II, he directed extensive training for Army, Navy, and Marine units, which proved decisive during landings in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. His leadership spanned critical operations including the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He is often credited as the "father" of this modern doctrine because he moved beyond simple beach landings to complex logistical and tactical coordination.
Smith's expertise was forged through diverse experiences. He served in the Philippines, Panama, and the Dominican Republic—where his troops gave him the moniker "Howlin' Mad" during 1916 operations against insurgents. During World War I, he became one of only six Marines to complete the Army General Staff College course at Langres. Due to this experience, he connected various military arms, ultimately becoming the initial Marine officer appointed to the Joint Army-Navy Planning Committee.
Despite his success, Smith's career was marked by intense inter-service friction. A notable conflict with U.S. Army General Ralph Smith during Saipan's operations, coupled with his 'service chauvinism', resulted in major hostility among high-ranking Army personnel. This tension was so acute that while Admirals Spruance and Turner wanted him to lead the Okinawa invasion in 1945, Admiral Chester Nimitz overruled them, opting for a different commander to avoid further conflict with the Army.
