The King who became the ancestor of almost every Briton
In short: Edward III was more than a medieval warrior; he was a genetic bottleneck. While his reign was defined by the brutal opening of the Hundred Years' War and the execution of his own mother's lover, his true legacy is written in DNA. Nearly every person of British ancestry today carries his lineage.
Edward III ascended the throne in 1327 at the age of 14, following the forced abdication and murder of his father, Edward II. His early reign was marked by a struggle for autonomy against his mother, Isabella of France, and her lover, Roger Mortimer. After securing his power—most notably by capturing and executing Mortimer in 1330—Edward began a systematic effort to rebuild England into a dominant power, mirroring the era of Edward I. He established the Order of the Garter, expanded Windsor Castle, and initiated the long-running Hundred Years' War against France starting in 1337.
The conflict with France was driven by Edward's claim to the French crown and disputes over territories like Gascony. While he achieved significant military successes, such as the destruction of the French navy at Sluys in 1340 and the decisive victory at Crécy in 1346, the wars were financially ruinous. His reign was further strained by the arrival of the Black Death in 1348 and the premature death of his eldest son, the famous 'Black Prince,' in 1376. Despite these hardships, Edward's political maneuvering ensured his descendants would dominate the English throne for centuries.
The true magnitude of Edward's influence is revealed in the genealogy of his children. He had seven sons and five daughters whose descendants contested the throne for generations, eventually culminating in the Wars of the Roses (1455–85). Because of the sheer number of his surviving descendants and the way they populated the nobility, geneticist Adam Rutherford has suggested it is 'virtually impossible' for a person with predominantly British ancestry not to be descended from Edward III. He estimates that almost every Briton is descended from the king between 21 and 24 generations back.
