From paratrooper to commander: The trajectory of a four-star general
In short: Joseph Votel’s career spanned nearly 40 years, moving from leading small rifle platoons in Germany to commanding entire geographic theaters. His journey illustrates the evolution of modern American military leadership, transitioning from direct tactical combat to high-level strategic oversight and private-sector national security advisory.
Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1958, Votel began his military career as an Army Infantry officer after commissioning in 1980. His early service was defined by foundational leadership roles within the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany, where he held positions ranging from rifle platoon leader to battalion adjutant. This period established a tactical foundation that would eventually support his command of elite units like the 75th Ranger Regiment.
Votel’s career reached a significant operational milestone on October 19, 2001, when he led 200 Rangers in Operation Rhino. During this mission, they parachuted toward an airfield south of Kandahar to attack Taliban targets. This experience in the early stages of Operation Enduring Freedom paved the way for his later roles as a general officer, where he directed initiatives against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and commanded the Joint Special Operations Command.
By 2016, Votel reached the pinnacle of military command as the commander of United States Central Command (USCENTCOM). During his tenure, he managed operations targeting the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, an organisation that gained notoriety during 2014. His tenure was marked by complex geopolitical navigation, including tensions with the Turkish government over the treatment of Pentagon contacts.
Votel retired on March 28, 2019, just five days after the territorial collapse of the Islamic State in Syria at the Battle of Baghuz Fawqani. Following his retirement, he connected defense and commercial industries by leading Business Executives for National Security (BENS) while providing consultancy to aerospace firms such as Sierra Nevada Corporation.
