In short: Perched high in the Hindu Kush mountains, Kabul International Airport has evolved from a 1920s airfield into a complex hub defined by international aid, Soviet modernization, and the dramatic 2021 U.S. withdrawal. Its runways have witnessed both the expansion of Afghan aviation and the intense pressures of geopolitical conflict.

Established during the reign of Amanullah Khan in the 1920s, the facility originally operated near Chaman-e-Hozori before moving to its current site. The airport underwent significant modernization in 1960 when Soviet engineers constructed a concrete runway and a new terminal. This era of growth facilitated international tourism, though it was curtailed following the 1978 Saur Revolution and the 1979 Soviet invasion. Over the following decades, the airport became a frequent target in regional conflicts, enduring missile strikes, bombings, and ground collisions.

The 21st century brought further development, notably the 2008 inauguration of a $35 million international terminal funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. In 2014, the facility was renamed Hamid Karzai International Airport to honor the former president. However, the site remained a focal point of instability. In August 2021, the airport became the center of a chaotic evacuation effort as thousands attempted to flee the Taliban takeover. The site suffered significant infrastructure damage during this period, with Taliban officials estimating the total cost of destruction at approximately $350 million.

Following the departure of U.S. forces on 30 August 2021, the Taliban returned the facility to its original name: Kabul International Airport. With technical assistance from Qatar and Turkey, operations resumed in September 2021, initially for domestic flights and humanitarian aid. Today, the airport serves as a primary base for Ariana Afghan Airlines and Kam Air, while also accommodating international carriers. Despite its turbulent past, the airport remains a vital link for Afghanistan, operating under the management of the UAE-based GAAC Holding and the local Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
