A secret heritage hidden by fear and a stolen identity
In short: Born to a villain and hidden in a desert town, Jackson Hyde spent years believing he was simply afraid of water. In reality, he was a biological experiment—a child of two warring underwater nations, whose true name, Kaldur'ahm, was kept secret to protect him from a fate of servitude.
In the DC Comics continuity, Jackson Hyde was raised in Silver City, New Mexico, by a foster family who intentionally kept him away from water. His parents taught him to fear the ocean, unaware that his biological parents were the villainous Black Manta and the Atlantean Lucia. This upbringing was a deliberate attempt to hide his heritage; his true parents were being sought by a second unidentified group, and his Atlantean abilities were suppressed to keep him safe from discovery.
The truth of his origin is rooted in the kingdom of Xebel. According to a recording from Mera, Jackson's parents were kidnapped and tortured by Xebellians while exploring the Bermuda Triangle. Because Jackson was the first 'outsider' born in Xebel in centuries, the Xebellian king ordered him to be experimented on to serve as a key to free their colony from exile. To save him, Mera stole the infant and placed him with the foster family on the surface world, eventually revealing his true name, Kaldur'ahm, and providing him with 'Water Bearers'—metallic constructs to help him control his hydrokinesis.
While the comic book version focuses on this tragic lineage and his journey to reconcile with his mother, the animated series *Young Justice* offers a different path. In that version, Kaldur'ahm is the son of Black Manta and the Atlantean Sha'lain'a, raised by his adoptive father, Cal Durham. Despite these narrative differences, both versions see the character evolve from a protégé into a major leader, eventually adopting the mantle of Aquaman and serving as the chairman of the Justice League.
