The biological paradox of a race built for another sun
In short: Kryptonians are a biological masterpiece of convergent evolution, possessing a cellular structure capable of absorbing solar energy at extreme levels. Yet, on their home planet, they were ordinary. Their superhuman status is not a birthright, but a metabolic reaction to a specific type of radiation.
The physiology of Kryptonians is defined by a complex genetic structure that allows for the absorption and processing of massive amounts of solar energy. On their homeworld, Krypton, which orbited a red star named Rao, their natural abilities were indistinguishable from humans. Superhuman capabilities only manifest if these individuals encounter a young yellow star, similar to our Sun. Because Earth's Sun is smaller than Rao but possesses a vastly higher energy output, Kryptonian bodies process the influx of energy to manifest powers like superhuman strength, flight, and heat vision.
This biological adaptability is complemented by a highly advanced, technologically sophisticated culture. Kryptonians utilized self-grown crystals—both natural and synthetic—to underlay their technology and store vast amounts of information. Their society was organized into a caste system where the Religious, Artist, Military, and Science castes held representation on a ruling council, while the Worker caste did not. Despite this advancement, the civilization was marked by severe xenophobia, a trait they shared with the evolutionarily related Daxamites.
The transition from a planetary civilization to a diaspora was marked by catastrophe. When Krypton exploded, most of the population perished, leaving only a few survivors like Kal-El, Kara Zor-El, and the family dog, Krypto. To endure the local atmosphere, Kal-El was transported to Earth as a fresh embryo inside a birthing matrix, due to the genetic reliance Kryptonians have on their native world. Furthermore, he had to be stripped of all Kryptonian minerals, as these would have instantly transformed into radioactive kryptonite upon leaving the planet's atmosphere.
