The tragic origin of a hero named for a fallen son
In short: Ikaris is a being of immense cosmic power, capable of melting iron and manipulating gravity. Yet his identity is rooted in a centuries-old Greek tragedy. He does not just possess his name; he carries the weight of a father's grief and a son's fatal mistake.
Born over 20,000 years ago in Polaria, Ikaris is a member of the Eternals, a race of virtually immortal beings. His physical form is augmented by cosmic energy, granting him immunity to aging and disease, and allowing him to regenerate injured tissue. He possesses high-level abilities, including the power to project heat beams reaching 3,000 Fahrenheit—hot enough to vaporize solid objects—and the ability to levitate himself and others at speeds of approximately 850 miles per hour.
His name is a memorial. During a conflict against the Deviants in old Greece, a human wife was married by Ikaris, who then became the parent of a boy called Icarus. The Eternal built his son mechanical wings to fly, but the inexperienced boy soared too high, lost consciousness in the upper atmosphere, and fell to his death. Devastated, Ikaris took his son's name as his own. This lineage even connects to human mythology; during the 'Great Cataclysm,' Ikaris guided a ship of humans to safety, where they mistook him for a bird and memorialized him as the dove that guided Noah.
The character's history is marked by internal and external conflict. He has been a professional wrestler known as 'Iceberg' Ike Harris and a Prime Eternal who defeated his rival, Thena. In various iterations, his narrative explores themes of memory loss and purpose. In one timeline, he committed mass suicide with the other Eternals upon realizing their true purpose; in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he committed suicide by flying into the sun after betraying his kin to prevent a planetary catastrophe.
