The economic engine of Isan is transforming into a high-tech smart city
In short: Khon Kaen, Thailand's fourth-largest city, is no longer just a regional hub. Through ambitious development plans and citizen-led initiatives, this Khorat Plateau center is engineering a massive leap in wealth and infrastructure to redefine the future of Northeast Thailand.
Located 450 kilometres northeast of Bangkok, Khon and Kaen serves as a vital pillar of the 'big four' cities in the Isan region. While the city municipality has long been a governmental seat, its recent trajectory is defined by a transition from agricultural roots to a 'Smart City' model. The Khon Kaen Think Tank (KKTT), comprising active residents, primarily spearheads this transformation by embedding advanced tech within the city's landscape. The city's administrative structure is organized into four distinct zones, which coordinate essential services and community growth across 95 different communities.
The scale of this economic ambition is significant. In 2016, the average GDP per person in the province was approximately 192,000 baht. However, the city's development plan aims to more than double this figure, targeting a range of 394,000 to 493,000 baht by 2029. This growth is part of a broader integration into Thailand's 12th national social and economic plan, which spanned from 2017 to 2021. This economic surge follows a period of rapid expansion, as remote sensing data shows a significant rise in urbanized land between 1990 and 2015, primarily through the conversion of former farmland.
Infrastructure is the backbone of this transformation. Mithraphap Road, referred to as Highway 2 or the 'Friendship Highway', splits the city and links Bangkok with the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. To support further expansion, plans are underway for a 26 km light rail network spanning from Samran to Tha Phra. This 15 billion baht project, featuring 18 to 21 stations, is expected to take two years to complete once approved, promising to modernize transit within the Mueang Khon Kaen District. The project's feasibility has already received endorsement from the Land Traffic Management Commission, a national-level think tank focused on transportation policy.
