The M252 mortar is a gravity-fed, British-designed weapon essential for modern infantry fire support.
In short: The M252 81 mm mortar is a versatile, man-portable system that provides critical indirect fire support to infantry units. By utilizing a smoothbore, gravity-fired mechanism, this weapon allows crews to launch high-explosive rounds with precision, bridging the gap between light infantry needs and the reach of heavier artillery systems.
The M252 is an adaptation of the British L16A2 mortar, which was developed in the 1950s. It officially entered service with the United States Army in 1987, replacing the older M29 mortar. The system was adopted primarily for its enhanced lethality and extended range, which spans from 4,500 to 5,650 meters. The weapon is composed of four main parts: the M253 cannon, the M177 mount, the M3A1 baseplate, and the M64A1 sight unit, totaling about 91 pounds when fully assembled.
Operation of the M252 requires a specialized five-person crew, including a squad leader, gunner, assistant gunner, and two ammunition bearers. The firing process is deceptively simple: the assistant gunner drops a round down the muzzle, where gravity pulls it toward the firing pin at the base. This triggers the propellant charges, which are shaped like horseshoes and attached to the round's tail. These charges release expanding gas that forces the projectile out of the tube. To ensure accuracy, the crew manages propellant amounts and adjusts the weapon's elevation and deflection based on specific firing data.
Innovation continues to evolve the platform. In 2014, the M252A1 was fielded, utilizing lightweight materials like titanium and aluminum to reduce the system's weight by 12 pounds. More recently, development has focused on precision-guided capabilities. Experimental rounds like the Advanced Capability Extended Range Mortar (ACERM) aim to integrate GPS navigation and laser seekers, potentially extending ranges significantly. While the system remains a staple of modern infantry, it is also subject to ongoing upgrades, such as the Marines' M252A2 version, which incorporates a 4x magnification sight and an improved cooling system to maintain effectiveness on the battlefield.
