In short: High in the Western Ghats, Matheran offers a rare escape from the modern world. Because no automobiles are allowed within its limits, this eco-sensitive plateau preserves a unique landscape of dense forests and red laterite earth, serving as a vital sanctuary for diverse wildlife and a retreat for travelers.

Matheran is a hill station situated in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, at an elevation of approximately 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level. First identified in May 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the district collector of Raigad, the area was developed as a summer getaway from regional heat. It now belongs to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, situated roughly 90 km from Mumbai and 120 km from Pune. Lord Elphinstone, the Governor of Bombay, helped establish its development. It is one of the smallest hill stations in India.

The region's unique geology is defined by Deccan trap basalt, which undergoes secondary alteration to become red laterite. This porous, iron-clay soil covers much of the hilltops and supports dense semi-evergreen forests. These forests are so thick they feature vegetation in top, middle, and ground storeys, attracting botanists for over a century. To protect this delicate ecosystem, the Union Environment Ministry declared Matheran an Eco-Sensitive Zone on February 4, 2003, which halted hazardous industrial construction. The local landscape is characterized by red gravelly earth. This specific soil structure contains a high volume of water.

Transportation within the town is restricted to non-automobile modes like horses, hand-pulled rickshaws, and municipality-operated ambulances or e-rickshaws. A significant piece of local infrastructure is the Matheran Hill Railway, a 20 km narrow-gauge line built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy. Following closures throughout 2016 and 2017, the toy train restarted on 26 January 2018 and now runs hourly between Matheran Station and Aman Lodge. The town's population was recorded at 5,139 during the 2001 census. Local wildlife includes bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs.
