A god-king's thousand-year reign was built on a lie of salvation
In short: On the world of Scadrial, ash falls constantly and supernatural mists cloak the land. For a millennium, a tyrant known as the Lord Ruler has reigned supreme. But his divine authority was not born of heroism; it was a calculated transformation that traded the world's freedom for survival against an ancient terror.
The current state of Scadrial is the result of a pivotal historical event occurring one thousand years before the novel's start. To fight off the Deepness, a frightening power with an unknown origin, the predicted Hero of Ages attained divinity at the Well of Ascension. While the Deepness was successfully repelled, the Hero did not return to a peaceful world. Instead, he took the title 'Lord Ruler' and established a tyrannical regime, fundamentally altering the planet's environment into a dystopian landscape of brown plants and falling ash.
Under this immortal rule, society was stratified into a rigid caste system. The nobility are believed to be the descendants of the Hero's original allies, while the 'Skaa'—the brutally oppressed peasantry—are the descendants of those who opposed him. This social structure is reinforced by Allomancy, a magic system where individuals metabolize specific metals to gain supernatural abilities. While most people can only burn one type of metal, a rare subset known as Mistborn can use every metal, making them the ultimate weapons against the established order.
The narrative follows a plot to dismantle this economy and regime. The rebel Kelsier aims to steal the Lord Ruler's hoard of atium, the precious metal that serves as the cornerstone of the empire's economy. His strategy involves a complex mix of destabilizing the nobility through house wars and creating a martyr's symbol to inspire the Skaa. Ultimately, the revelation that the Lord Ruler is actually an advisor named Rashek—who murdered the true Hero to seize his immortality through Feruchemy—exposes the regime as a parasitic theft of power rather than a divine mandate.
