The North Yorkshire pyramid that watches the skies for incoming missiles
In short: High on Snod Hill, a massive, nine-floor tetrahedron scans the horizon. While it tracks orbiting satellites and space debris, its most critical role is providing the vital early warning needed to detect a ballistic missile attack before it arrives.
RAF Fylacindales, located in the North York Moors, serves as a cornerstone of the United States-UK intelligence-sharing arrangement. Originally part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS), the station now utilizes the Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS). Its primary mission is to provide the British and US governments with warning of impending ballistic missile attacks—a function that was central to the 'four minute warning' era of the Cold War.
The station's architecture has evolved significantly since its construction by the Radio Corporation of America in 1962. The original site featured three 130-foot diameter geodesic 'golfball' radomes containing mechanically steered radar. Between 1989 and 1992, Raytheon replaced these with the current truncated tetrahedron structure. This 'pyramid' is nine floors high, rising 120 feet from its base at 820 feet above sea level, and is unique for its 360-degree coverage.
Beyond missile detection, the facility performs 'Space Situational Awareness' as part of the US Space Surveillance Network, tracking orbiting objects. It also operates a Satellite Warning Service for the UK, monitoring foreign spy satellites to ensure UK intelligence activities can occur when they are not overhead. While the station is a British asset, it is part of a larger network including stations in Greenland and Alaska, and its data feeds directly into the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado.
The station's role in the US National Missile Defense (NMD) plan has been a point of intense debate. While the UK agreed to use the site for NMD tracking to improve detection of launches from Africa and the Middle East, critics—including the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament—argue that the system primarily benefits the US and could destabilize relations with Russia.
