The British base that hosts only American jets
In short: RAF Lakenheath is a unique piece of military geography. While it remains a Royal Air Force station in Suffolk, England, it currently hosts exclusively United States Air Force units. From its origins as a WWI bombing range to a Cold War nuclear deterrent, its history is defined by shifting alliances.
The site's strategic importance dates back to the First World War, when it served as a bombing and ground-attack range for the Royal Flying Corps. By 1940, the Air Ministry designated it as a decoy airfield for nearby RAF Mildenhall. During World War II, it functioned as a satellite base for Short Stirling bombers of No. 149 Squadron, which operated from there until mid-1944 before moving to Norfolk.
The transition to its modern role began in the late 1940s. Following Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union, President Harry S. Truman ordered Strategic Air Command B-29 Superfortress bombers to Europe. By July 1948, these aircraft were deployed to Lakenheath. A major shift occurred in 1960 when the 48th Fighter Wing moved from France to Lakenheath following French President Charles de Gaulle's demand that non-French nuclear forces withdraw from his country.
The base has since evolved through several generations of high-tech aircraft, including the F-111 Aardvark and the F-15E Strike Eagle. In 2020, it began transitioning to a multirole capability with the introduction of 54 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighters. This shift was supported by a dedicated campus construction that began in 2017. Today, the base remains a critical hub for NATO's deterrent forces and long-range strike missions.
Beyond its military hardware, Lakenheath holds a unique social history. During the Cold War, it became a site of cultural intersection; many African-American servicemembers were stationed there in the 1950s. This led to the formation of small communities of mixed-race children in nearby Norwich, whose lives were shaped by the presence of black GIs and British mothers.
