From 15-second pins to political seats: the dual life of Rick Steiner
In short: Before he was a wrestling icon, Rick Steiner was a collegiate standout who set a blistering record at the University of Michigan. His transition from a high-speed athlete to a professional wrestling powerhouse—and eventually a public official—highlights a unique trajectory of physical dominance and community leadership.
Rick Steiner's professional foundation was built on elite collegiate wrestling. At the University of Michigan in 1983, he placed second at the Big Ten Championships and established a school record for the fastest pin in history, clocking in at just 15 seconds. After earning a bachelor's degree in education, he entered the professional circuit, initially wrestling under his birth name, Robert Rechsteiner, before adopting the Rick Steiner moniker. During his collegiate tenure, he faced future National Champion Tab Thacker of North Carolina State. He was first introduced to the pro scene by George "The Animal" Steele. He also competed in the American Wrestling Association and the Universal Wrestling Federation.
His career is defined by a prolific partnership with his brother, Scott. Together, they became a dominant force in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), winning the World Tag Team Championship seven times as a duo. Their trajectory included high-profile jumps to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1992 and various international stints, including New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Steiner's career was marked by complex narrative arcs, including a transition from a 'dim-witted' villain in The Varsity Club to a fan favorite, and a dramatic 1997 split from his brother that led to months of intense rivalry. He won the IWGP Tag Team Championship twice in Japan. In 1987, he captured the UWF World Tag Team Title alongside Sting. He also held the World Television Championship three times. His career included a notable appearance at the second ever Clash of the Champions.
Beyond the ring, Steiner transitioned into public service. Since 2006, he has served as a member of the school board for Cherokee County, Georgia. This shift from the high-octane environment of professional wrestling—where he held titles like the United States Heavyweight Championship and the World Television Championship—to local governance illustrates a diverse career spanning elite athletics, entertainment, and civic responsibility. He holds the distinction of being an eight time World Tag Team Champion. His professional journey began immediately after his college graduation. He has maintained his board position for nearly two decades. This public role follows a career of diverse international and domestic competition.
