How one wrestler appeared on two rival television programs on the same night
In short: In 1997, Rick Rude achieved a unique feat in professional wrestling: he appeared on both WWF Raw and WCW Monday Nitro on the same evening. This bizarre television collision was possible because the WWF program was pre-recorded, allowing Rude to jump between promotions during the height of the Monday Night War.
Richard Erwin Rood, known as Ravishing Rick Rude, was a prominent figure in professional wrestling from 1982 until his retirement in 1994. A four-time world champion, Rude competed for major organizations including the WWF, WCW, and ECW. His career was defined by his arrogant heel persona, characterized by his signature disrobing routine and airbrushed tights, which often featured the likenesses of his opponents' family members to incite crowd reactions.
Rude’s career was marked by significant physical challenges. After a legitimate neck injury in December 1992 forced him to forfeit his United States Heavyweight Championship—a reign that remains the second-longest in the title's history—he eventually retired following a back injury sustained in May 1994. Despite these setbacks, he returned to the industry in 1997, briefly joining ECW before becoming an on-screen manager for the D-Generation X stable in the WWF.
His departure from the WWF in late 1997 was catalyzed by the Montreal Screwjob, a controversial event that left him disillusioned with the promotion. Because he was working on a pay-per-appearance basis rather than a full-time contract, he was able to negotiate a deal with WCW. This flexibility led to his historic dual-appearance on November 17, 1997, when he appeared on both Raw and Nitro, cementing his legacy as a unique, if transient, figure in the industry until his death in 1999.
