In short: Robert de Brus was a powerful lord, justice, and regent with a legitimate claim to the Scottish crown. Yet, during the Great Cause, he was defeated by legal technicalities, losing his family's royal ambitions to John Balliol and setting the stage for his grandson to become king.

Known as Robert the Competitor, Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale, lived from approximately 1210 to 31 March 1295. His life was defined by vast holdings across Scotland and England, including estates in Essex, Durham, and Cumberland. He was a significant political figure, serving as a regent for the young King Alexander III and holding high offices such as Justice and Constable of Carlisle Castle.

His claim to the Scottish throne emerged during the 'Great Cause' (1290–1292) following the death of the seven-year-old Margaret, the 'Maid of Norway,' who died in the Orkney islands around 26 September 1290. This extinction of the senior royal line left thirteen claimants. Robert argued for his right based on proximity of blood, as he was a second cousin to Alexander III and descended from the king's second daughter, Isobel.

However, the legal battle favored John Balliol. In early November 1292, a court of auditors—including twenty-four chosen by King Edward I—decided in favor of Balliol, who held a superior claim under feudal law. The final judgment was delivered on 17 November 1292. This loss meant the Bruce family's royal ambitions were deferred, though Robert's grandson, Robert the Bruce, would eventually secure the throne.

Robert's complex legacy is marked by his shifting political allegiances and his extensive marriages. He first married Isabella de Clare of Gloucester and Hertford, with whom he had children including Isabel de Brus. His second marriage to Christina de Ireby in 1273 significantly expanded his northern territories through her inherited dower lands.
