A titan's fortress rising 400 feet above the Thar Desert
In short: Perched atop the Bhakurcheeria hill, Mehrangarh Fort was born from a need for survival. Built by Rao Jodha to escape the vulnerabilities of Mandore, this massive sandstone stronghold has weathered centuries of siege, leaving visible scars of cannonball impacts on its formidable, towering walls.
The origins of Mehrangarh date back to approximately 1459, when Rao Jodha, the 15th Rathore ruler of Marwar, sought a more defensible capital. Moving away from the thousand-year-old Mandore fort, Jodha established Jodhpur on a rocky hill known as Bhakurcheeria, or the mountain of birds. This strategic relocation was essential for the security of the Rathore clan, who claim mythical descent from the sun god, Surya—a lineage reflected in the fort's original name, Mihirgarh.
While the foundation was laid in the 15th century, the architectural majesty seen today primarily stems from the 17th century. The complex spans a vast 1,200 acres, with walls reaching heights of 120 feet and widths of 65 feet in certain sections. The fort's defensive history is etched into its very stones; for instance, the second gate still bears the imprints of cannonballs fired by attacking armies from Jaipur.
Beyond its military utility, the fort is a masterpiece of Rajput craftsmanship. It contains several exquisite palaces, including the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), the Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), and the Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors). Even as the fort's function shifted, its grandeur remained, exemplified by the 19th-century Takhat Vilas residence built by the last resident maharaja, Takhat Singh. Today, the fort remains the property of the maharaja of Jodhpur, housing galleries that preserve the region's rich history of Mughal art, textiles, and weaponry.
