In short: Raffy Tulfo transformed from a college dropout and radio host into one of the Philippines' most powerful politicians. Known as Idol, he built a massive following by championing public grievances on air. Despite a history of legal battles and libel convictions, he secured millions of votes in the 2022 election.

Born in Quezon City in 1960, Rafael Teshiba Tulfo spent four years in college across various majors without completing a degree. He entered broadcasting, eventually finding fame through his long-running public affairs program, Wanted sa Radyo. His media presence expanded significantly on YouTube, where his channel, Raffy Tulfo in Action, became the third-most subscribed Filipino channel by 2021. This platform allowed him to cultivate a reputation as a defender of the common citizen, a persona that proved highly effective when he transitioned into national politics.

Tulfo's path to the Senate was not without controversy. Throughout his career, he faced numerous legal challenges, primarily involving libel. In 2005, a regional trial court sentenced him to up to 32 years in prison for 14 counts of libel, though the Supreme Court later acquitted him in 2021. Another case involving businessman Michael Guy resulted in a conviction that the Supreme Court upheld in 2019, leading to increased damages. These legal hurdles even sparked a disqualification case during his 2022 Senate bid, which he ultimately overcame to win a seat with over 23 million votes.

Since taking office in 2022, Tulfo has focused on legislative efforts targeting government accountability and worker protection. He has filed bills to regulate the importation of second-hand goods, mandate rapid response times for critical infrastructure services, and improve safety in prisons. His committee work includes chairing the Senate Committee on Energy, where he has pushed for investigations into rotational blackouts and potential national security risks regarding foreign ownership of the national power grid. Despite persistent speculation about a future presidential run, Tulfo has publicly stated he has no interest in the position.
