From Lingerie Footballer to WWE Star: The Evolution of Summer Rae
In short: Before she was a mainstay of the WWE ring, Danielle Moinet was a captain in the Lingerie Football League. Her journey from the gridiron to the global stage of professional wrestling highlights a unique transition between high-impact sports and the choreographed spectacle of sports entertainment.
Summer Rae, whose real name is Danielle Louise Moinet, started her sporting journey within the Lingerie Football League (LFL). During the period of 2008 to 2011, she led the Chicago Bliss as their captain while also playing cornerback. Her tenure in the LFL concluded on June 30, 2011, during an All-Star Game held at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Moinet transitioned to professional wrestling in late 2011, signing with WWE and entering their developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). Her rise was marked by versatility; she served as a ring announcer before transitioning into an in-ring competitor. The first Diva promoted from the rebranded NXT to the main roster was her in 2013, when she first appeared alongside Fandango as a dance partner and valet.
Her career was defined by complex alliances and high-profile rivalries. She was a key member of the 'Beautiful Fierce Females' alongside Sasha Banks and later formed 'The Slayers' with Layla. Beyond the ring, Moinet expanded into film, becoming the first Diva to appear in an action movie with 'The Marine 4: Moving Target' in 2015. However, her career also faced scrutiny; she was involved in the cryptocurrency wallet Prime Trust, which faced regulatory action in Nevada in 2023 after consumers lost over $80 million.
After being released from WWE in 2017, Moinet made an independent circuit debut in Australia in 2018. She eventually returned to the WWE spotlight in 2022, appearing as a legend and participating in the Royal Rumble, marking a full circle from her early days in developmental wrestling.
