In short: Modern naval warfare is defined by the ability to strike multiple targets simultaneously while defending against incoming threats. The Type 052D destroyer represents a pivotal shift for China, moving from specialized systems to a multi-purpose platform capable of handling air, surface, and subsurface threats with a single launch system.

The Type 052D, often referred to informally in Chinese media as the "Chinese Aegis," marks a significant technological leap for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Unlike its predecessor, the Type 052C, which utilized a revolver-type vertical launching system (VLS) primarily for surface-to-air missiles, the 052D introduced a canister-type universal VLS. Beyond one specific role, this platform manages various weapons, such as CY-5 anti-submarine missiles, CJ-10 land-attack cruise missiles, YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles, and HHQ-9 surface-to-air missiles.

Central to its capabilities is the four-panel Type 346A (Dragon Eye) active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. This flat-paneled technology, combined with the Type 518 L-band radar, allows the ship to maintain high-precision tracking in complex environments. For underwater detection, the vessel employs both a linear towed array sonar and a variable depth sonar (VDS), the latter of which is deployed through a hydraulic mechanism in the transom. These sensors feed into a sophisticated suite of data links, including the JSIDLS (equivalent to Link 16) and the next-generation NCTDL, which supports encrypted data for UAVs.

The ship's physical design reflects these requirements, featuring a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) powerplant that drives two shafts to reach speeds of 30 knots. While the standard Type 052D carries a Harbin Z-9 helicopter, a stretched variant known as the Type 052DL was developed to accommodate the larger Harbin Z-20. With 35 vessels commissioned by March 2026, the PLAN has made this one of the fleet's most prevalent primary surface combatant types.
