Wab Kinew: From Troubled Youth to Canada's First First Nations Provincial Premier
In short: Wab Kinew’s path to becoming Manitoba’s 25th premier is a study in transformation. Once a young man struggling with alcoholism and criminal convictions, Kinew reinvented himself as a broadcaster, author, and politician. Today, he leads Manitoba as the first First Nations person to serve as a provincial premier in Canadian history.
Born in 1981 in Kenora, Ontario, Wabanakwut Kinew is a member of the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation. His early life in suburban Winnipeg was marked by both academic success and significant personal turmoil. By his early twenties, Kinew faced multiple legal challenges, including convictions for impaired driving and assault. His 2004 assault of a taxi driver, which he later recounted in his 2015 memoir, The Reason You Walk, remains a point of contention, as his written version of events differs significantly from the testimony provided during his sentencing hearing. He also faced charges of domestic assault in 2003, which were stayed.
Kinew’s journey toward public life began in earnest after he sought rehabilitation through traditional Indigenous ceremonies and Alcoholics Anonymous. He eventually quit drinking and, in 2016, received a pardon from the Parole Board of Canada, which removed his past convictions from the national police database. Before entering politics, he established a career as a journalist and host for CBC Radio and Television, earning a Canadian Screen Award nomination for his work on the documentary series 8th Fire. He also served as an administrator at the University of Winnipeg, focusing on Indigenous relations.
Entering the political arena in 2016, Kinew faced immediate scrutiny when past misogynistic and homophobic social media comments resurfaced. Despite the scandal, he won his seat in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. He became leader of the New Democratic Party in 2017 and led his party to victory in the 2023 provincial election. As premier, his administration has focused on healthcare reform, public safety, and economic initiatives, such as expanding the Port of Churchill. His tenure represents a historic milestone, marking the first time a First Nations individual has held the office of premier in any Canadian province.
