The scientist who vanished by shattering across time and space
In short: In the world of Undertale, Dr. W.D. Gaster is a ghost in the machine. As the former Royal Scientist who built the Core, he disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only cryptic code, Wingdings, and a mystery that continues to haunt his spiritual successor, Deltarune.
Dr. W.D. Gaster is a fictional character from Toby Fox's 2015 game Undertale. In the game's lore, he served as the Royal Scientist before Alphys, responsible for creating the Core—a machine that converts geothermal energy into magical electricity for the Underground. His disappearance is described as being "shattered across time and space," a concept that has led some fans to believe his existence is spread across different dimensions.
Gaster is rarely encountered through normal gameplay. Instead, his presence is felt through rare events triggered by a specific "fun" value or by players modifying the game's files. These encounters include the "Mystery Man" sprite—which some suggest is based on the character Uboa from Yume Nikki—and a secret location known as "room_gaster," which contains a message written in the Wingdings font titled "Entry Number Seventeen."
The character has sparked intense community speculation. Because Sans and Papyrus are named after fonts, many players believe the "W.D." in Gaster's name stands for Wingdings, suggesting he might be a skeleton related to the two brothers. While Deltarune contains no direct mentions of Gaster by name, it is filled with allusions to his music and themes, leading many to believe he remains a central, if hidden, force in the overarching narrative.
Despite the depth of fan theories, some critics suggest Gaster might simply be leftover content from development. Writer Mattia Podini has argued that the obsession with his lore might be an example of apophenia, where players perceive meaningful connections between unrelated data points.
