The expansion that transformed a gaming phenomenon into a global esport
In short: When World of Warcraft released its first expansion in early 2007, it didn't just expand the map; it redefined the industry. By introducing competitive arena combat and massive new territories, it set a record for sales and laid the groundwork for professional electronic sports.
Released on January 16, 2007, The Burning Crusade was a commercial juggernaut, selling nearly 2.4 million copies on its first day alone. Within the first month, sales reached approximately 3.53 million copies, including 1.9 million in North America and 1.6 million in Europe. This massive influx of players entered a transformed landscape, featuring the ravaged world of Outland and a raised level cap of 70.
The expansion fundamentally altered the game's social and competitive mechanics. It introduced new playable races—the Alliance's Draenei and the Horde's Blood Elves—which broke long-standing class restrictions, allowing Draenei to become shamans and Blood Elves to become paladins. It also introduced the Arena System, a death-match style PvP mode (2v2, 3v3, or 5v5) that has since become a cornerstone of the franchise's esports presence.
The competitive impact was immediate; the World Series of Video Games in 2007 featured 3v3 matches for cash prizes, and Blizzard subsequently established the World of Warcraft Arena Tournament. This tournament's first 5v5 world final took place at BlizzCon ’07, marking the end of the first season. While the expansion received near-universal praise from critics, some reviewers noted that the new starter areas felt somewhat 'tacked on' and lacked smooth integration with the existing world.
Beyond the gameplay, the expansion's release faced regional hurdles. In mainland China, delays were required to meet Ministry of Culture visual standards, such as requiring player deaths to result in a tombstone rather than a corpse. In Europe, distribution errors meant Collector's Edition rewards had to be redeemed via postal mail, leading Blizzard to compensate players with an exclusive in-game pet.
