A subterranean war erupts as the Void threatens to consume Azeroth
In short: The destruction of Dalaran has left the world in chaos. As the Harbinger of the Void, Xal'atath, mobilizes her forces, heroes must venture into the depths of Khaz Algar to prevent a total catastrophe. From the floating cities to the webbed kingdoms of nerubians, the stakes have never been higher.
The War Within marks the beginning of the Worldsoul Saga, a trilogy of expansions led by executive creative director Chris Metzen. The narrative follows the fallout of the destruction of Dalaran, a city obliterated by Xal'atath, the Harbinger of the Void, who absorbed the city's arcane energies into the Dark Heart relic. An onslaught by nerubians—an old breed of sentient spiders—has driven survivors toward the Isle of Dorn. This conflict follows the events of Dragonflight. The primary narrative involves the mysterious Radiant Song visions experienced by many.
The plot focuses on Khaz Algar, a world beneath the surface split into four areas: Azj-Kahet, Hallowfall, the Ringing Deeps, and the Isle of Dorn. Within Hallowfall, players meet the Arathi, humans and high elf descendants from Arathor's ancient Empire, living under Beledar, a giant crystal providing solar light. Meanwhile, in the depths of Azj-Kahet, Queen Ansurek has usurped her mother, Queen Neferess, by making a bargain with Xal'atath to restore her kingdom's glory. The Arathi protect their territory using holy light from Dawntowers. Meanwhile, the nerubian spymaster known as the Weaver seeks allies to resist the queen.
As the threat expands, a massive coalition known as the Algari Offensive has formed. This alliance brings together the Horde, the Alliance, and the newly playable earthen race to defend Azeroth. The earthen, who had previously been isolated and bound by Titan edicts, have recently renounced those ancient laws to gain the freedom of choice, uniting under a reformed Council of Dornogal to face the encroaching darkness. To bolster their ranks, the coalition includes the Stormriders, who recently appointed Lufsela as their new Stormward. This group utilizes elemental stormrooks as mounts for battle.
