In short: Most luxury brands are born from market trends, but Amouage was born from a royal mandate. Founded in 1983 at the request of Sultan Qaboos, this Omani house blends national symbols with modern blockchain technology to redefine what it means to own a piece of heritage.

In 1983, Prince Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi established Amouage in Muscat, Oman, specifically to fulfill a request from Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. This origin story anchors the brand in Omani identity, a theme that persists in its design language. The brand's packaging features distinct national icons: women's perfume lids mimic the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque's dome, whereas the men's versions mirror the ceremonial Kanjar dagger, Oman's national symbol.

The brand has undergone significant leadership shifts, including the appointment of David Crickmore as CEO in 2006 and the creative direction of Christopher Chong until 2019. By 2025, Renaud Salmon took over as creative director. Despite its niche status, the company maintains a massive industrial footprint, operating a two-storey factory in Muscat that opened in December 2012. This facility has the capacity to produce approximately 25,000 bottles every week, supporting a global retail presence that includes 21 standalone shops and various department store partnerships.

Amouage is currently navigating the intersection of traditional luxury and high-tech provenance. Joining the Aura Blockchain Consortium in July 2025, it marked the initial entry for a Middle Eastern beauty label into this Swiss non-profit supported by Prada Group, Cartier, and LVMH. This move introduces a Digital Product Passport for fragrances, utilizing blockchain to provide customers with digital ownership certificates and a way to verify authenticity in an increasingly complex global market.
