The luxury house that trades traditional ads for cultural artifacts
In short: Acne Studios didn't become a global fashion powerhouse through standard marketing. Instead, it built its prestige by treating fashion as a subset of art, architecture, and academia. By prioritizing intellectual depth over commercial noise, the Stockholm-based label transformed from a denim experiment into a multidisciplinary cultural curator.
Founded in 1996 as part of the creative collective ACNE, the brand began with a focus on graphic design and production. Its first major breakthrough came in 1997 when cofounder Jonny Johansson gifted 100 pairs of raw denim jeans with red stitching to friends and family. The organic popularity of these jeans, noted by Vogue Paris and Wallpaper*, allowed the brand to rapidly expand its offerings beyond denim into a full luxury house. The brand's identity is rooted in a multidisciplinary approach. Rather than relying on traditional advertising, Acne Studios publishes a biannual magazine called Acne Paper, which explores themes in architecture, academia, and photography. The publication has featured diverse contributors ranging from Noam Chomsky and David Lynch to Tilda Swinton.
This strategy reflects Johannson's interest in contemporary culture, leading to high-concept collaborations with entities like the world's oldest bike manufacturer, Bianchi Bicycles, and the couture house Lanvin. Financially, the brand has maintained a trajectory of controlled growth. In 2016, it turned over $215 million annually. While it successfully resisted a takeover offer from Kering, it eventually saw equity shifts in late 2018, with IDG Capital and I.T Group acquiring stakes of 30.1% and 10.9% respectively, while Johannson and executive chairman Mikael Schiller remained majority shareholders. Today, the brand operates over 60 boutiques and supplies approximately 800 retailers worldwide, maintaining its status as a global leader in ready-to-wear and accessories.
