In short: In 1845, Ferdinand Adolph Lange set out to industrialize a single German region. His dream of a watchmaking cluster survived the Soviet occupation, the collapse of the Weimar Republic, and the destruction of his headquarters, only to be reborn decades later.

The origins of A. Lange & S.öhne lie in the technical training of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, who studied in Dresden before traveling through France, England, and Switzerland. His journey was more than a pilgrimage; it was a mission to bring advanced precision to the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge). By implementing the metric system instead of the traditional 'ligne' and inventing tools like a micrometer capable of measuring to a thousandth of a millimeter, Lange laid the foundation for a specialized industrial cluster in Glashütte.

The company's history is marked by extreme volatility. Following World War II, the Soviet occupation led to the nationalization of the firm in 1948, causing the original A. Lange & Söhne to cease to exist. During this era, the brand name disappeared from dials as companies were merged into the publicly owned VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe. It was not until December 7, 1990, that Walter Lange, the founder's great-grandson, re-established the company, precisely 145 years after its original founding.

Today, the brand maintains a 'Teutonic' design philosophy, distinct from Swiss styles. This is characterized by 'austere' aesthetics, such as the outsize date and the use of German silver—a material more difficult to work with than the plated brass found in Swiss movements. While the company is now a subsidiary of the Richemont Group, it remains committed to in-house production, with a development process for new calibers that can span four to five years.
