The high cost of ultra-luxury: six staff members for every one guest
In short: Aman Resorts operates on a philosophy where privacy is the ultimate commodity. By maintaining an incredibly low room count and a staggering staff-to-guest ratio, the brand creates a secluded sanctuary that feels less like a hotel and more like a private estate.
Founded in 1988 by Indonesian hotelier Adrian Zecha, Aman began as a personal project to build a holiday home in Phuket. Because banks refused to lend for such a small-scale boutique venture, Zecha and his partners self-funded the first resort, Amanpuri. From its inception, the brand positioned itself at the apex of luxury, reportedly charging nightly rates five times higher than local competitors.
The company's growth has been defined by complex ownership shifts involving international investment funds and real estate giants. After a period of expansion in the 1990s and early 2000s, the group was acquired by India's DLF for $400 million in 2007. In 2014, Russian businessman Vladislav Doronin purchased the brand for $358 million to reduce DLF's debt. Since 2015, Doronin has served as both chairman and CEO, overseeing a transition toward becoming a 'lifestyle brand' that includes clothing lines and residential properties.
Aman’s distinct identity relies on architectural preservation and extreme service standards. Properties often feature fewer than 55 rooms, with many offering private villas or pavilions in rural settings. In Cambodia, the company even reconstructed a ruined villa from the 1960s using only old tourist photographs as a guide. However, this high-touch model faces scrutiny; in 2026, ownership of Amanyara in Turks & Caicos considered terminating its management agreement, citing a decline in service standards under Doronin's leadership.
The brand has also faced significant legal and security controversies. In early 2023, the company's global director of security, a former FBI official, was arrested on money laundering charges related to a sanctioned Russian oligarch. This incident highlighted the complexities of navigating international sanctions while operating a high-profile luxury portfolio.
