The high-stakes psychology of betrayal in Dutch reality television
In short: In a game inspired by Mafia, 18 contestants must navigate a castle where three secret traitors work to eliminate the rest. It is a study of social engineering and deception, where viewers see the truth while players are forced to weigh trust against survival.
De Verraders (The Traitors) premiered in 2021 on RTL 4 as a reality broadcast hosted by Tijl Beckand. The core mechanic involves three 'Verrader' (Traitors) and fifteen 'Getrouwe' (Faithful). While the faithful are kept in the dark about who is lying, the audience is informed of the traitors from the very first episode, creating a voyeuristic experience of psychological manipulation. The production has moved across several countries, including France and Belgium, for different seasons. During the first season, a specific contestant was even offered a traitor role later in the game.
The game structure alternates between secret nightly meetings where traitors decide on an elimination and public 'Raad' (Council) voting rounds. To survive, faithful contestants must identify the liars before they are 'murdered'—a narrative device where eliminated players leave the castle and reveal their true identities. Some seasons have introduced mechanics like shields to protect individuals from elimination or missions to earn silver bars as a prize. In the third season, five people actually played as traitors instead of three. The final prize rules also varied, with some seasons requiring at least one traitor to remain for them to win.
The show has evolved significantly in its production. While early seasons featured celebrities, the fourth season (2024) transitioned to civilians. The series has also expanded into exclusive Halloween-themed editions on Videoland, filmed at De Havixhorst. Because of the intense psychological pressure involved in these social dynamics, all contestants are required to undergo a psychological test before participating and are offered professional psychological help following the production. The first season's finale featured a unique game where two finalists had to independently declare their roles to split the silver bars. One specific winner from the civilian season was a gym owner who switched roles mid-game.
