Beyond the DeLorean: How Giorgetto Giugiaro Shaped the Modern World's Everyday Objects
In short: Named Car Designer of the Century in 1999, Giorgetto Giugiaro is best known for the DMC DeLorean and the Volkswagen Golf. Yet, his influence extends far beyond the garage, encompassing everything from camera bodies and office furniture to the very architecture of the modern minivan and cathedral organs.
Born in 1938, Giorgetto Giugiaro began his career at Fiat in 1959 before honing his craft at design studios like Bertone and Ghia. In 1968, he founded Italdesign, a move that allowed him to define the aesthetic language of the late 20th century. His early work favored the fluid, arched lines seen in the Maserati Ghibli, but by the 1970s, he pivoted toward the sharp, angular 'folded paper' style that became his signature. This era produced iconic vehicles like the 1974 Volkswagen Golf, the 1976 Lotus Esprit S1, and the 1981 DMC DeLorean.
Giugiaro’s impact on automotive utility is perhaps best exemplified by the 1978 Lancia Megagamma concept. Commissioned by Fiat, this monospace design featured a high roof and a compact footprint. Although Fiat deemed it too risky for production, the Megagamma served as the conceptual blueprint for the global minivan and MPV movement, directly influencing vehicles like the Nissan Prairie and the Chrysler minivans. His ability to blend form and function earned him the Compasso d'Oro industrial design award six times.
His creative output is remarkably eclectic, spanning far beyond the automotive sector. He has designed camera bodies for Nikon, racing chronographs for Seiko, and office furniture for the Okamura Corporation. His non-automotive projects include the 1983 Navigation promenade of Porto Santo Stefano, a 7,000-pipe organ for the Cathedral of Lausanne, and even a unique pasta shape named 'Marille'. Today, he continues his work at GFG Style, a studio he founded in 2015 with his son, Fabrizio Giugiaro, maintaining a legacy that bridges high-performance engineering with everyday industrial design.
