In short: Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was the 18th century's most prodigious decorator. Moving from the dramatic shadows of his youth to the airy, effervescent colors of the Rococo, he mastered a style of "infinite fire" and astonishing speed that defined the visual elegance of an era.

Born in Venice in 1696, Tiepolo's early work was marked by a heavy chiaroscuro—a dramatic contrast between light and shadow. His first public work, The Sacrifice of Isaac (1716), demonstrated this intense, melancholic style. However, as he reached full maturity around age 30, his technique underwent a radical transformation. In his frescoes for the Palazzo Arcivescovile of Udine, he abandoned heavy shading in favor of bright, luminous colors while maintaining his precise formal structure.

This evolution allowed him to become the preeminent decorative painter of the Rococo period. He was known for a "spontaneous execution" that combined virtuosic draftsmanship with a sense of rapid conception. This skill was essential for his massive commissions, where he often worked "day and night without rest," as he noted during his decoration of the Villa Loschi in 1734. His ability to suggest complex structures through quick sketches and watercolors made him a favorite of the European nobility and clergy.

Tiepolo's influence and fame extended far beyond Venice, reaching Milan, Germany, and Spain. He was described by Count Tessin in 1736 as a painter of "dazzling colour" and "astonishing speed." Whether depicting biblical episodes or mythological scenes, his work—such as the suite illustrating Torquato Tasso's epic poem in the Palazzo Corner—often evoked a sense of enchantment through vast, open skies and creamy, vibrant paint. He remains a cornerstone of the 18th-century Venetian school.
