The Dance of Dragons intensifies as the Targaryen civil war reaches a breaking point
In short: As the civil war known as the Dance of Dragons tears House Targaryen apart, the struggle for the Iron Throne escalates. With Rhaenyra and Aegon II leading opposing councils, the fight for Westeros moves beyond mere politics into a high-stakes battle for survival and legitimacy.
Commencing on 21 June 2026, the third season of House of the Dragon depicts the growing feud involving Aegon II Targaryen and his half-sister, Rhaenyra Targaryen. This civil war, famously termed the 'Dance of Dragons,' has left the House Targaryen family deeply divided. Daemon Targaryen, acting as both uncle and husband, joins the Black Council in backing Rhaenyra, whereas Alicent Hightower and the Green Council support Aegon II. The conflict continues from the previous season's conclusion. This intense struggle leaves the dynasty fractured. Both sides desperately hunt for powerful allies.
Both factions are actively seeking allies among the great houses of Westeros to secure the military support necessary to claim the Iron Throne. The production, which was filmed between March and October 2025 at Leavesden Studios, features an expansive ensemble cast. Notable additions to the cast for this season include James Norton as Ormund Hightower, Tommy Flanagan as Roderick Dustin, and Dan Fogler as Torrhen Manderly. Other newcomers include Tom Cullen, Joplin Sibtain, Barry Sloane, and Annie Shapero. The production was overseen by showrunner Ryan Condal. This season consists of eight individual episodes. The filming took place at Watford.
The season's narrative is drawn from George R. R. Martin's prequel novel, Fire & Blood. The series has seen massive global engagement, with the season premiere attracting 21.5 million viewers. By the time the finale aired on August 9, 2026, the season had reached an average of 33 million viewers per episode. Critical reception has been largely positive, with a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 'generally favorable' score of 75 on Metacritic. The story is based on Martin's book series. The musical score was composed by Ramin Djawadi. This season's release was scheduled for mid-2026.
