The Dance of the Dragons: A brutal war for the Iron Throne
In short: A devastating war of succession threatens to tear Westeros apart. Fought between Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and King Aegon II Targaryen, the conflict pits the 'Blacks' against the 'Greens' in a struggle for absolute power that reshapes the fate of the Seven Kingdoms.
The conflict, known as the 'Dance of the Dragons,' is a civil war centered on the legitimacy of the Iron Throne. The central dispute involves Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, representing the 'Blacks,' and King Aegon II Targaryen, representing the 'Greens.' This succession crisis was preceded by years of tension within the royal court, fueled by the decisions of King Viserys I Targaryen.
Viserys I, posthumously called 'Viserys the Peaceful,' inadvertently sowed the seeds of discord through his succession choices. After the death of his son Baelon—who died following a difficult C-section performed on his mother, Queen Aemma Arryn—Viserys named his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir. This decision bypassed his brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen, and set the stage for future conflict.
The war involves complex alliances and shifting loyalties. Prince Daemon, known as the 'Rogue Prince,' proved a formidable but unpredictable military leader, winning the War for the Stepstones by defeating the Triarchy leader Craghas Drahar at the Siege of Bloodstone. His actions, ranging from seizing Harrenhal to using terror tactics against the Brackens, highlight the brutal nature of the struggle.
The war's impact extends beyond the battlefield to the very stability of the realm. From the political maneuvering of the Small Council to the violent skirmishes involving the City Watch and various Riverlords, the 'Dance' represents a total breakdown of the peace established during the reign of Viserys I.
