The Scottish Royal Favourite Who Shaped a King and Nearly Broke a Nation
In short: John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, was the unlikely tutor who became the architect of George III’s early reign. As prime minister, he negotiated the end of the Seven Years’ War, but his influence triggered a decade of political instability and set the stage for the American Revolution.
Born in 1713, John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, emerged from a background in Scottish nobility to become the most significant royal favourite of his era. After meeting Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1747, Bute eventually became the tutor to the young Prince George. When George III ascended the throne in 1760, he viewed Bute not merely as a minister, but as a moral and intellectual compass, relying on him to help purify a political system he found inherently corrupt.
Bute’s premiership, lasting from 1762 to 1763, was defined by the Treaty of Paris, which concluded the Seven Years’ War. While he successfully secured peace, the process isolated Britain from its European allies and left the government vulnerable to intense domestic criticism. Bute’s attempts to restore fiscal order—including the introduction of a cider tax and the decision to make American colonists pay for their own administrative costs—backfired spectacularly. These policies, combined with his Scottish heritage, made him a lightning rod for public resentment and the target of savage satire by journalists like John Wilkes.
Beyond politics, Bute’s legacy is marked by his role as a patron of the arts and sciences. He encouraged George III’s interest in botany and helped foster a greater appreciation for the graces of life within the court, a cultural shift that eventually culminated in the King founding the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. Despite his resignation in 1763, the instability he left behind persisted for a decade, as George III struggled to assemble a functional government, ultimately failing to reconcile the crown’s financial needs with the growing resistance of his subjects.
