The extravagant king whose debts were paid by Parliament
In short: George IV was known as 'the first gentleman of England,' yet his lifestyle was a financial catastrophe. From secret marriages to a coronation featuring 12,000 diamonds, his pursuit of Regency-era splendor pushed the British monarchy to the brink of scandal and bankruptcy.
Born in 1762, George IV’s reign was defined by a tension between high culture and deep profligately. While he was a patron of immense taste—commissioning John Nash to remodel Buckingham Palace and rebuild Windsor Castle—his personal life was marked by extreme debt. By 1795, his liabilities reached an extraordinary £630,000, a sum roughly equivalent to £65 million today. To prevent a total collapse, Parliament intervened with the Prince of Wales Act 1795, providing him an annual grant of £65,000.
His personal relationships were equally turbulent. He entered a secret, legally void marriage with the Catholic Maria Fitzherbert in 1785, a union prohibited by the Act of Settlement 1701. To satisfy his father’s demands and secure parliamentary aid, he later entered a loveless, politically motivated marriage with his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick, in 1795. The marriage was so disastrous that George attempted to use the Pains and Penalties Bill to divorce her, even excluding her from his 1821 coronation.
Despite the scandals, George IV’s era saw significant geopolitical shifts. During his time as Prince Regent (beginning in 1811), his government under Lord Liverpool presided over Britain's victory over Napoleon. However, his political influence waned in his later years. While his coronation was perhaps the most expensive in British history—featuring a banquet for over 2,000 people—his reputation was often tarnished by the very extravagance that defined his aesthetic legacy.
