The era of the pre-teen hero and the end of mentors
In short: In 1997, Power Rangers Turbo didn't just change the team; it dismantled the show's foundational rules. It introduced the franchise's first pre-teen Ranger, retired its most iconic mentors, and orchestrated a massive generational handoff that paved the way for the series' transition into deep space.
Power Rangers Turbo served as a pivotal transitional season for the franchise. It began following the release of 'Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie' and was based on the 20th Super Sentai series, Gekisou Sentai Carranger. The season was defined by a radical shift in casting and lore: it featured the departure of the long-running mentors Zordon and Alpha 5, who returned to the planet Eltar. They were replaced by the spectral Dimitria of Inquirus and Alpha 6.
The show also broke a major casting precedent by introducing Justin Stewart as the Blue Ranger. At just 12 years old, Justin became the first pre-teen Ranger in the series' history. To account for his youth and smaller stature, the narrative established that he could morph into an adult-sized form. During this period, Nakia Burrise left while seasoned performers Steve Cardenas, Catherine Sutherland, and Johnny Yong Bosch made their concluding regular roles.
The narrative arc of Turbo was one of graduation and succession. Katherine Hillard, Tanya Sloan, Adam Park, and Tommy Oliver relinquished their powers to a different team: T.J. These four individuals were selected to replace the original four members. Johnson, Carlos Vallerte, Ashley Hammond, and Cassie Chan. This cycle of replacement concluded with a high-stakes finale where the Rangers were forced to leave Earth for space to rescue Zordon from Dark Specter. This move directly set the stage for the next iteration of the franchise, 'Power Rangers in Space.'
