In short: In a retirement home, a man reads a story to his wife, who is losing her memory to Alzheimer’s. The twist? The story is their own life. It is a musical adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel that explores how memory, class, and time shape our deepest connections.

On 14 March 2024, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre hosted the Broadway debut of a musical based on the 1996 Nicholas Sparks book. Noah Calhoun and Allie are the protagonists in this show, which features a book by Bekah Brunstetter and music/lyrics from Ingrid Michaelson. The narrative structure is non-linear, weaving between the present day—where Allie suffers from Alzheimer’s—and two distinct past eras: their first meeting as teenagers and their reunion ten years later.

The story focuses on the class-based tensions between a boy from a working-class background, Noah, and a girl from a rich family, Allie. Despite parental disapproval and social barriers, the two fall in love. A pivotal moment occurs when Noah renovates an abandoned house for Allie, only for her to become engaged to a wealthy man approved by her parents. The story reveals a hidden layer of conflict: Allie’s mother intercepted and hid Noah’s letters for years, leading Allie to believe he had moved on.

The production is noted for its complex casting, featuring three different actors to portray the characters at different ages (Young, Middle, and Older). While the Broadway run closed in December 2024, the production has expanded globally, including a Philippine production in 2026. The work explores the mechanics of devotion, specifically Noah's commitment to writing a letter every single day, and the tragic reality of a love that persists even as the mind begins to fail.
