In short: In the critically acclaimed musical Kimberly Akimbo, a teenage girl faces a cruel biological reality. Suffering from a condition that causes her to age four and a half times faster than normal, Kimberly must navigate family secrets and unrequited love while racing against a life expectancy of only sixteen years.

Based on David Lindsay-Abaire's 2001 play, the musical explores the life of Kimberly Levaco. Kimberly's condition, which gives her the appearance of an elderly woman, forces her to maneuver through complex family dynamics, including a frequently drunk father named Buddy and a mother, Pattie, who is pregnant with a new baby. The narrative follows Kimberly as she navigates her sixteenth birthday—the age her life expectancy is estimated to be—and her desire to see the world. She dreams of visiting Six Flags Great Adventure. Her friend group includes Seth, Martin, Aaron, Delia, and Teresa. These teenagers often feel like misfits.

The production features a score by Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by Lindsay-Abaire. The musical's journey from off-Broadway to Broadway was marked by significant success. Following its December 8, 2021, off-Broadway debut at the Linda Gross Theater, the production secured Best Musical honours from the Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, and Drama Desk Awards. Critics particularly lauded the acting of Bonnie Milligan, Justin Cooley, and Victoria Clark. The musical's composer has also written Fun Home. Lindsay-Abaire previously collaborated with Tesori on Shrek the Musical.

When the show moved to the Booth Theatre on November 9, 2022, it continued its streak of success, winning five Tony Awards. These included Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score. Individual acting honors were also awarded, with Victoria Clark winning Best Leading Actress in a Musical and Bonnie Milligan winning Best Featured Actress in a Musical. The story remains a poignant reflection on living life to the fullest in the face of inevitable mortality. The production's success included winning a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This achievement highlights the playwright's significant contribution to contemporary theatre.
