In short: Born Børge Rosenbaum, Victor Borge fled Nazi-occupied Denmark with only twenty dollars. He arrived in America unable to speak English, yet he mastered the language by watching movies and transformed himself into a global icon, blending classical piano mastery with sharp, inventive comedy that spanned radio, television, and stage.

Victor Borge was a child prodigy who began piano lessons at age two and earned a scholarship to the Royal Danish Academy of Music by 1918. After establishing himself as a classical concert pianist in the 1920s, he began incorporating humor into his performances. This signature style proved vital when he escaped Denmark in 1940, arriving in the United States as a refugee. Despite the language barrier, Borge rapidly adapted his act for American audiences, eventually securing spots on major radio programs like those hosted by Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby.

Borge’s comedy was defined by a sophisticated, self-deprecating wit. His famous routines included 'Phonetic Punctuation,' where he vocalized punctuation marks, and 'Inflationary Language,' which involved adding one to every number mentioned in his speech. He often utilized physical comedy, such as buckling himself into the piano bench for 'safety' or playfully mocking audience members regarding the cost of sheet music. His one-man show, Comedy in Music, opened in 1953 and set a record at the time for the longest-running one-man show in theater history with 849 performances.

Beyond his stage persona, Borge was a multifaceted figure. He was a successful businessman who popularized Rock Cornish game hens and a dedicated philanthropist who helped establish the Thanks to Scandinavia Fund. He remained active until his final days, performing up to 60 times a year even at age 90. When he passed away in 2000 at 91, he left behind a legacy that bridged high culture and popular entertainment, honored by multiple honorary doctorates and statues in both Denmark and the United States.
